Church History
This course will aim to provide the student with that understanding of Christian History that will give him the context for approaching today’s problems. Men, movements and theological issues are considered from the beginning of the Church’s history to the present day. The course will include:

Early Church History to 451 AD

The Patristic period, the Church and the Roman Empire, Ecumenical Councils, Church organisation, crises and development in theology.

The Medieval Period

 

The growth and power of the papacy, monasticism, mysticism and scholasticism, the forerunners of the Reformation, the Renaissance and the demands for reform.

The Reformation Era to the Rise of Nonconformity

 

The Reformers on the Continent and in Britain, their theology and impact, the Anabaptists, the Puritans, the beginnings of Nonconformity.

The Evangelical Revival to the Present Day

 

Background to the 18th Century spiritual awakening, the progress of the revival in England, Scotland, Wales and America, missionary expansion, 19th Century developments, the Ecumenical Movement, current theological and ecclesiastical trends.
