Pastoral Theology
While other parts of the syllabus will also be geared to the
preaching and pastoral ministry, this course will specifically
deal with pastoral and practical matters. Subjects
covered in the course will include:
|
Principles of worship and preaching;
homiletics and voice production.
|
Conducting weddings and funerals; the prayer meeting;
the church meeting. |
Chairing elders’ and deacons’ meetings;
church discipline; church administration; church constitutions
and trusteeship. |
Sunday School work; the church and the inner city;
evangelism and missionary concern; pioneer work; evangelical
unity. |
Pastoral counselling; visiting the sick and bereaved;
care of the terminally ill and their families; trauma
situations; marriage and divorce; relating to children
and the opposite sex; handling relationships. |
The preacher’s care of himself, wife and family;
his reading and use of time. |
Besides taking it in turn to minister at the morning service
before lectures begin, there are opportunities for the students
to preach at weekend church services, to lead midweek meetings,
to conduct services at homes for the elderly, to engage in
open-air witness and door-to-door visitation. During the vacations
students are encouraged to be more fully involved in the life
and work of their own churches and it is sometimes possible
for summer placements to be arranged.
